Opportunities to Serve the Hungry & Homeless in our Community

As a community we are called to move beyond the boundaries of our church walls to “Reach out in Love.”  Through the years Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church has forged relationships with many organizations in our community to help serve those in need.  The Way of Service program helps to connect people with these organizations through service opportunities.  The Way of Service program schedules regular group events to work with these organizations as well as connecting individuals with service opportunities in the community.  Events include grocery bagging of donated food; sorting and bagging rice and beans; and cleaning and painting days at the Salvation Army and various food kitchens, and family nights at shelters.  Everyone is welcome to participate, and we welcome your suggestions for new ideas, people to lead and organize events, and organizations with which to work.

For more information, or to sign up for any service opportunity contact Paul Wilcox.

Martin Luther King DAY of Service - January 21, 2013

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the Martin Luther King holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. The Way of Service and Peace and Social Justice sponsors an array of opportunities to serve throughout the weekend including preparing meals, warm clothing drive, sorting clothes for homeless, writing letters to military families, assembling hygiene kits and refugee welcome backpacks.

Contact Paul Wilcox for more information.

TOILETRY COLLECTION - YEAR ROUND

As you head out for your vacations, please remember to bring something back for the homeless; your hotel toiletries. Throughout the year the Mission & Service Ministry collects toiletries for distribution to the homeless. You may drop off items during the monthly food drive or at any time in the church mail room. If you aren’t traveling but would still like to help, pick up an extra tube of toothpaste, bar of soap or bottle of shampoo when you’re at the store. Donations are welcome any time of the year.

School SUpplies Collection

Summer 2011 we collected back-to-school supplies that were assembled into backpacks and donated to youth served by Sunnyvale Community Services and Refugee Ministries. Items donated include backpacks, binders, calculators, folders, scissors, colored pencils, crayons, notebooks, erasers, glue sticks, highlighters, rulers, and dictionaries.

Rice & Bean Bagging

Several times a year the Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church community packages rice and beans to add to grocery bags given out by Sunnyvale Community Services. Friends and members of the church community are encouraged to participate by signing up for one-hour shifts. Together, in assembly-line style, a ton of rice and beans is repackaged for SCS to insert into the monthly groceries they give to their 1,200 clients. This is an activity that anyone from small children through older people can do with ease. It is fun and very helpful to Sunnyvale Community Services.
