Tutoring Opportunities
Nimitz Elementary School in Sunnyvale is looking for community volunteers who would be interested in working with their students tutoring them in reading and spelling American English. Nimitz will train the volunteers and provide needed materials. They ask that volunteer tutors commit to working with at least one Nimitz student through the school year. The hope is the volunteers will return for next year to work with the same student. The tutoring commitment is twice a week, on non-consecutive days, when school is in session and must be done onsite at school during school hours (8-2/2:30). Each tutoring session runs 45 to 60 minutes.
Nimitz needs tutors who can model clear pronunciation of American English. If English is not your first language, you must be willing to work on correcting your pronunciation of specific sounds, especially short vowel sounds. Some of this practice is built into the training.
Nimitz also needs to be sure that each tutor has good enough phonemic awareness to be able to catch when a student mispronounces a word. To this end, Nimitz asks that volunteers visit Barton Reading and Spelling online and take the Five-Minute Tutor Screening. If you feel comfortable with the results, please contact Rachel Abramovitz (below) to set up an appointment for an in-person screening.
In order for adult volunteers to work in the schools, they need to provide a current TB test showing negative results. These tests are good for four years. The school does have a discounted coupon available for a specific location.
Nimitz has required training scheduled for Level 1 on Friday, January 8 from 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Cupertino Union School District Offices (10301 Vista Drive, Cupertino, 95014). The same class will be repeated on Sunday, January 10 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. at McAuliffe School in Saratoga. As this is really short notice, another training class will be scheduled once there are sufficient volunteers.
After the first training, Nimitz will match you with a student and then you will work out the tutoring schedule with the classroom teacher. After tutoring for about a month, you will take the Level 2 training. Each student moves at their own pace so training for Levels 3 and higher requires you to check out a training DVD from the school library, obtain the tutoring materials from Nimitz, and train at your convenience.
