Alternative Gift Faire
Through the combined efforts of the Mission Ministry Area and the Peacemaking Committee, Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church’s first Alternative Gift event was instituted in 1987 as a Gift Faire in the Phoenix Center gym complete with a variety of crafts and different outreach groups. After some years Alternative Gifts International (AGI) shopping became a stand-alone project with individuals and families selecting “gifts” from the AGI catalog.
In December 2009 Sunnyvale Presbyterian Church completed its twenty-second Alternative Gifts event. It was fitting that in a year of high need in the United States and around the world, a record was set at our church for AG shopping, topping the $20,000 mark for the first time. The event was special in another way, too, with an original intergenerational musical event integrated into the worship service on November 29, the first day of Advent. This event provided a model for educating students about the world and an opportunity for children to learn valuable lessons about giving to those in need, as well as a less materialistic way to celebrate the birth of Christ.
The Alternative Gift Fair will return in November and December 2010 with help from a lot of our friends in giving AGI gifts that give outward and onward for people in need. Any time of the year visit Alternative Gifts International for more information or to order gifts.
